Description

Long time no see.

So here's my newest biology of, the first entry from the 5th generation of the Pokémon series. I would like to acknowledge :iconchimental:, as he chose the subject for this piece when he correctly guessed the identity of shedinja oh so many months ago. We also have :iconcrystaltalian:, who was the first to guess the correct identity of Ferrothorn back in October, and therefore the lucky winner of the opportunity to choose the subject of my 39th biology of project. Lastly, I want to acknowledge everybody that guessed ferrothorn's identity correctly, even though sadly, they don't win anything (excepting this shout-out, obviously): :iconsmashbrosdude::iconcharizardlv100::iconthepandaman:

Anyway...I'm hoping that the steam I'm running on from a very inspiring artist talk with Walton Ford (for those that don't read my journal, look him up) will stay with me for a while, and hopefully I'll be able to get up another image soon...or at least a preview.

I know my handwriting is hard to read. I'll do a transcription in the morning.

Ferrothorn and Pokémon are the intellectual property of Nintendo and Gamefreak.

:pokeball: No. 598 - Ferrothorn

"There is some dispute as to how exactly a ferrothorn can move its tendrils so swiftly and with such force, but it is generally agreed that movement is achieved by expansion and contraction of cells on the exterior and interior of the bending of the vine, respectively."

"Ferrothorn are sometimes known to 'fire' their thorns by means of a form of dehiscence, wherein the sudden opening of the shell (which, incidentally, houses the seed) [sends the thorn] flying."

"Ferrothorn hunt by lying in wait, suspended from cave ceilings. When their rudimentary eyes (specially adapted to detect motion in low-light) spot prey, ferrothorn drop their considerable weight, stunning the target and then proceed to entangle the pray. Once the prey stops struggling, the ferrothorn can embed its roots an absorb the prey's nutrients."

"Like most plant pokémon, ferrothorn possess a rudimentary organ system similar to the nervous system of animals. In the case of ferrothorn, the 'brain' enables detection of visual stimuli, as well as the [movement] of a ferrothorn's tendrils without need for external stimuli."

"As a ferroseed grows into a ferrothorn, the roots at its base sprout into thick vines."

"The ferroseed's body begins to flatten as the vines grow longer an stronger."

"The body continues to become squatter, while its shell grows harder an harder."

"Fully-developed, the ferrothorn reorients itself, and assumed hanging position."
